Growing ‘leaner and meaner’
Global consultancy Quint Wellington Redwood has launched, through its Malaysia entity, the Lean IT Association offering the accredited Lean IT Foundation eLearning to local professionals.
Its regional director of Asia Jeffrey Doss said that, together with its Lean IT classroom training portfolio, Quint was now able to offer, through its wholly-owned Malaysia subsidiary, opportunities for training on the global standard for Lean IT education and certification.
Doss said that “Lean offers fundamental concepts for today’s business, from design and initial set-up to operations and transformation.” The concepts revolve around establishing long-term results for customers and stakeholders, as well as several other key benefits.
As Malaysia’s vision for the IT sector to act as a catalyst in helping the country become a high-income knowledge-based economy, this move serves as a solid boost to the field of technology here, he added.
“The eLearning course has been developed to provide participants a solid understanding of the key concepts and equip participants with the skills to manage, support and lead Lean Transformations. Key to the success of the course is its highly interactive and media-rich format, which gives participants an eye-opening focus on Lean methodology and how organisational improvement can be delivered by focusing on the value stream and the elimination of waste,” he said.
Professionals in Malaysia can use the industry-standard Lean IT reference materials and other resources to develop a clear understanding of the value and positioning of Lean IT relative to other bodies of knowledge, frameworks and standards, said Doss, adding that successful participants of the eLearning course will be awarded the Lean IT Foundation Certificate.
LITA (Lean IT Association) is a consortium of global leaders in the IT Training and Certification Industry with the mission to establish the global standard for Lean IT education and certification, setting a new reference point for professionals across a broad spectrum of knowledge and competence skills.
What exactly is ‘Lean’?
Conceptually, Lean IT is a method for improving the quality of products or services and has to date been proven highly effective, explained Doss. Originally developed by Toyota for the production of motor vehicles, the basic philosophy has now been scientifically applied to many sectors.
“As a basic premise, Lean IT focuses on the aim to maximise customer value and reduce waste. It’s based on the premise that an end user can determine true value; so what Lean IT maintains is that by continually improving on the path to the goal, the end result will create greater value but with less or equal resources,” said Doss.
For SMEs to be able to make effective use of the five Lean perspectives, considerable changes may have to be made to their current work methodologies and concepts; effectively, a Lean transformation.
“A conducive Lean IT approach would ensure the development of attitudes and behaviour befitting a future-oriented agile organisation. It is all about enabling employees a higher chance of accepting initial changes and allowing them to absorb it and adapt to future changes,” said Doss.
“The Lean IT method builds upon the principles of Lean Manufacturing combined with Six Sigma elements to the IT environment. Results are achieved by focusing on customer value, creating transparency, focusing on results, coaching in Lean leadership and the ability of the staff to learn continuously,” he added.
In the preparatory phase, the method entails designing the training of line managers and employees, identifying and organising the conditions, determining the KPIs and creating a familiarisation session with all stakeholders.
An analysis is then performed with respect to the customer, the process, organisation and performance, as well as attitude and behaviour. This reveals waste and bottlenecks that are then dealt with on a daily basis. The 1st version KPI dashboard is also delivered.
During the transformation phase, which consists of several cycles, the process involves focusing on the implementation of process improvements, the introduction of Visual Management to allow for transparency and insight and to create a culture where continuous improvement is at the operational core.
“The Lean methodology ensures the creation of an organisational culture that can independently and continuously search for and eliminate waste. In a sense, continuous Improvement has been incorporated into the companies DNA,” Doss further said.
The Lean IT Certification Scheme consists of 4 distinct certifications for various levels, starting at entry level with Lean IT Foundation and moving into Lean IT Associate, climbing further up the ladder to Lean IT Leader or Coach.
